Casual Tennis with SOSUPERSAM: By Way of On

Samantha Duenas, also known as SOSUPERSAM, is a DJ, a radio host, a personality, everyone’s favorite funny girl. And the best part? She’s been my friend for over a decade. We’ve had seasons and changes in our friendship and found each other again in motherhood. What a trip it is to be dancing in the club during fashion week in New York City as twentysomethings to talking postpartum hacks and couples therapy in our late thirties.

And it’s not just postpartum, it’s this very specific hard in toddlerhood, in the changes in our careers, in the truly unhinged stage of our lives as women who really have it “together.” Or some version of what “together” looks like. It’s been cool to navigate this season together, even if sometimes it feels like the blind leading the blind or babies taking care of babies.

We had our Casual Tennis session, and Sam hit like she’s played before. She did amazingly. And when you’ve been thrown into parenthood, and it’s not something you’ve ever done before, and not excel in it the way you have with everytihng else in your life, it’s sort of incredible to be able to pick up a racquet, smash a ball, and be good off jump. And after, did she cry? You’ll have to ask her.

What did playing tennis feel like that day?

It felt exuberant! I feel the most joy when I am learning a new physical activity. I love process of searching for an understanding between mind and body. Learning foundations and technique and perfecting them through drills. I'M SO COOL I KNOW.

What do you do in your day-to-day that has brought you joy? What is something that’s made you feel powerful or strong?

Lately I really enjoy my first morning moments. I have a ritual of waking up before the rest of my household, making a cup of coffee, reflecting in my journal, and staring out the window admiring the sky and the nature around our house. I cherish those few minutes of quiet, I think they set my inner tone for the day.

Can you tell me about the season you’re in currently? Mentally and emotionally?

It's Spring inside!!!! I feel I'm in bloom. At some point in my postpartum I decided to pause and spend several months looking inward. I reevaluated my pillars of meaning, took lots of notes, made lots of space to explore within. Now I am beginning to feel mentally and emotionally rejuvenated.

Can you tell me how THIS RELATES to your career and the path you envisionED for yourself?

honing this career and a professional blueprint that works! After Covid/Pregnancy/Postpartum I felt very, very jumbled inside and out. This blueprint now looked unfamiliar and seemed to no longer serve me in this new chapter of life. Choosing to pause was a difficult and uncomfortable choice to make. But I'm glad I did because it allowed me uninterrupted sincerity of my energy and the space to flow uninhibitedly. It provided me some insight on who I am and what I want to do next.

What’s been your relationship with movement?

Movement is at the core of my spirit. I love the physical challenge, the mind body connection, the mechanics. Started out as a dancer and playing sports, I love the gym, I love extreme sports. There isn't anything I won't try. Postpartum has some bright moments and some really dark moments. I realized movement is also a tremendous anchor for me spiritually. I've made it a point to move my body everyday as a pillar to my existence.

You recently shared some post baby body size stuff “I was here, I want to be here” on your IG and I wonder how that felt and how you did it in a way that shared about personal health (what’s right for you doesn’t mean it’s right for someone else) while being so aware of positivity and encouragement (versus comparison or this snap back culture we’ve grown accustomed to).

It felt vulnerable, honest, and kind. Postpartum body identity is very difficult, it can be disorienting, disheartening, and frustrating. I've been very focused on reconnecting with my body through joyful movement. Carving out consistent time to do activities that make me smile, like ballet, Barry's bootcamp, running, learning tennis. It's been about 18 months since I gave birth and I am back in my pre-baby clothes. I'm proud of my process, it has been full of kindness and patience.

What have been some helpful questions you’ve been asking yourself in this time?

What brings you joy? What are your core beliefs? What are you naturally good at? What are you interested in learning?

Who have you included in your

“Clubhouse”

 AND WHY?

Louise, Joanne, Christine, Janice (my therapist!), Sarah, Julianna, Adrianna

How do you approach new things? What is the feeling?

I am a zealous student! I approach new things with a notebook and new .38 tip pens and highlighters! I'm ready to take notes, and ask questions. I love to be a beginner and learn! I just love it!

What is your special superpower? Your unique gifting that you bring to your community and ultimately to the world?

A sense of humor maybe? Life is not always fun, but it's always funny if you have a sense of humor about it.
